Motorist dies in gruesome R24 accident outside Rustenburg

A 60 year old driver was killed instantly after driving underneath a trailer of a truck at high speed on the R24 Rustenburg-Magalies Road on Thursday morning. The motorist was driving an S40 Volvo Sedan from Carltonville to Rustenburg when the driver of a truck with two trailers allegedly turned over the double barrier lines to exit the petrol garage instead of using the Doringlaagte exit near Olifantsnek dam. The
motorist drove underneath the rear trailer at around 5h00 about three kilometres before the Derby turnoff.

Emergency personnel struggled to free the body of the driver from the wreckage of his vehicle underneath the trailer using the Jaws of Life. The road was partially closed for about four hours and traffic controlled by provincial public safety traffic officers. Police are investigating a cases of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving. North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa wishes to convey his condolences to the family of the man that died in the accident and appeals to motorist not to disregard traffic signs and to drive within permissible speed limits.

Yawa says that traffic law enforcement and in particular speeding operations will be intensified henceforth on the R24 due to accidents that were experienced on the road in recent weeks.
