A sixty year old motorist was arrested for drunken driving on the R511 Brits-Pretoria road outside Brits in the North West Province on Sunday afternoon.
The male suspect who was travelling alone from Pretoria towards Brits in his Toyota Corolla sedan was stopped by a Provincial Public Safety traffic officer at near Silkaatsnek at around 12:30 pm. The officer requested for his driver’s licence and requested him to step outside his car after observing smell of alcohol on his breath, bottles of alcohol in his vehicle and incoherent speech.
Attempts to get the suspect to blow the breatheliser were unsuccessful as he was staggering and could barely stand on his feet. One officer drove the suspect’s vehicle under escort to the Brits police station where a case of drunken driving was opened. The suspect was then taken to the Brits Provincial Hospital and blood extracted for an alcohol test.
The motorist, who is in police custody, is expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate Court on Monday to answer to charges of drunken driving.
Acting MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Dr Magome Masike on Sunday vowed that zero tolerance operations focused on drunken driving dubbed Operation Futhawill be intensified as part of Operation Hamba Kahle.
Over a hundred motorists have thus far been arrested throughout the North West province for drunken driving since the commencement of Arrive Alive Festive Season Campaign and When Duty Calls Crime Fighting Campaign.
