A mother and her son died and three other family members were injured in a crash after a car overturned on the R503 Mahikeng-Lichtenburg road in the North West Province in the early hour of Monday morning.
The horrible crash occurred between Rooigrond and Danville outside Mahikeng, about 10 kilometers outside Mahikeng just after midnight .It is alleged that a 37 year old man who was driving a Toyota Corolla with five occupants lost control of his vehicle which overturned as he reportedly tried to avoid stray animals that were on the road.
The 34 year old woman and her 4 year old son died at the scene after they were thrown out of the vehicle while her husband and other children, a one year old toddler and 16 year old were rushed to Mahikeng Provincial Hospital with serious injuries.
The road was partially closed as accident scene experts combed the scene for evidence and paramedics attended to the injured family members.
Police are investigating a cases of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison ,Ms Desbo Mohono wishes to convey her condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the crash and also wish the injured road users a speedy recovery.
MEC Mohono appeals to owners of livestock not to leave their animals to wander without shepherds.
