The level of compliance on the UIF Act by small companies is totally alarming. This has been discovered by the UIF campaign conducted by the Department from the 24 July to date.
The Departments is engaged in a campaign to influence companies to register with the UIF Act, and declare and pay UIF contributions on the 7th of each month.
This engagement is influenced by the decrease in declarations and payment of contributions by employers nationally and that impacts negatively to service delivery when claimants apply for UIF benefits.
The department kickstarted the campaign in the central region with door to door visits at Mdantsane Areas followed by a number of formal sessions in the East London, Fort Beaufort, King Williams Town and Butterworth areas.
At least 218 companies visited in the central region through door to door campaign. Out of the 218 companies, 146 companies have not registered with the UIF Act, only 62 companies are registered and complying, and the other ten totally refuses to co-operate with officials.
This week the Department is engaging employers in the Eastern Region that includes Tsolo, Mt Fletcher and Mthatha. In the Eastern Cluster out of at least 92 companies that have been visited, 69 is found not to be complying, 11 companies complying and 12 companies would not avail information citing that the boss is away. The officials will this afternoon visit Mthatha employers on a door to door.
This week the campaign will finish with the visit to Cradock employers and Queenstown respectively.
The department will close the campaign with door to door employer visits and formal discussions in the Humansdorp, Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown areas.
“We are left with no option but to enforce the UIF Act vigorously as the levels of compliance are alarming” said Mr Thabo Madikazi, Deputy Director Unemployment Insurance Fund in the Eastern Cape. “We have engaged with employers and educated them on the UIF Act. Our Inspectors will visit them again and will leave no stone unturned but to enforce the law.”
