More police die at the hands of criminals

The killing of yet another police officer, this time in Wentworth, KwaZulu-Natal yesterday, continues to enrage not only the South African Police Service (SAPS) top management but every member of the SAPS. In 2011 alone over 60 officers have been killed and just in the last three weeks, four officers have been killed - this has become utterly contemptible.

Constable Njabulo Sikhakhane and a colleague responded to an armed robbery and were subsequently shot dead by one of the suspects during a gunfight.

Police management has urged every member of the SAPS to make maximum use all the equipment provided to them when performing their duties, especially the bullet resistant vests.

To complement this, members undergo regular refresher courses on the use of their weapons and to sharpen their tactical kills. Our officers are constantly urged to be vigilant and approach every situation as a life threatening one, whether on or off duty. However, these efforts seem not to bring an end to this massacre.

Over the years many of our officers have given their lives to protect the people of South Africa and now the South African Police Service top management is again calling on every South African to take a firm stand against this growing affliction.
