More than one million vehicles stopped and checked in Eastern Cape in 2012/13

The Eastern Cape traffic law enforcement agencies have since April 2012 till March 2013 stopped and checked more than one million vehicles on Eastern Cape roads.

This was revealed during the presentation of the department’s 2013/14 policy speech by MEC Thandiswa Marawu at the Provincial Legislature in Bhisho today.

“We salute our contingent of provincial and municipal traffic officers, who worked together with other law enforcement agencies in the implementation of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan,” said MEC Marawu.

The officers were expected to stop and screen 85 000 vehicles per month and each officer was expected to stop and check a minimum of 15 vehicles per eight hour shift.

In the new financial year the department will embark on “Going to Basics” theme of law enforcement.

This theme will include the reintroduction of Standing Operating Procedures, which involve compulsory morning parades as well as the old and effective point to point patrols, where officers travel a maximum speed limit of 60 km on the side of the road to increase visibility.
