More than 142 000 motorists checked

As part of Easter traffic law enforcement operations, more than 142 000 motorists were checked during the past four days.

From Friday until 14h00 today (30 March to 2 April), 142 857 vehicles and drivers were checked across the country and thousands of fines issued for various traffic offences.

Yesterday (Sunday, 1 April), KwaZulu-Natal traffic authorities reported a truck driver arrested at Pietermaritzburg for driving a truck whilst the truck was overloaded by 20 360 kg. On Saturday (31 March), a truck driver was arrested, also in Pietermaritzburg, for driving a truck overloaded by 19 500 kg.

During the past week alone (26 March to 1 April), more than 250 000 motorists were checked and more than 100 un-roadworthy public transport vehicles (buses and taxis) discontinued from use.

Over the past month (1 to 31 March), as part of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan (NREP), more than one million drivers and vehicles were stopped and checked.

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has again called on road users to exercise extra caution on the country’s roads, ahead of the Easter long-weekend.

“Traffic law enforcement will be intensified across the country ahead of the Easter long week-end to ensure safer roads. National, provincial and local traffic authorities are on high alert, and dangerous driving will not be tolerated. No mercy will be shown to reckless and negligent drivers. We urge motorists to drive with their headlamps on at all times, and to ensure that all occupants of their vehicles are buckled up. Report road traffic offences to 0861 400 800. Road safety is everybody’s responsibility,” said Minister Ndebele.
