The thrust of the community mobilisation strategy to sustain the momentum of the onslaught against lawlessness and crime to be rolled out in the North West Province would be targeted at crime hot spots and strengthening partnership between police and communities, Provincial MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono announced on Thursday.
MEC Mohono was addressing law enforcement officers at the closing of the Provincial Arrive Alive –Duty Calls Festive Season Operations and the launch of February Safety Month held at the Harry Oppenheimer Stadium in Orkney.
MEC Mohono said that zero tolerance law enforcement operations involving the North West Road Traffic Management Unit and the South African Police Service will be sustained as part of implementation of the 2011-2020 Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign.
Mohono expressed gratitude to traffic officers for stamping their authority against lawlessness on public roads during the period that the province experienced increased traffic volumes over the festive season.
Over 19000 summonses were issued to motorists for various traffic violations and 50 motorists for driving while under the influence of alcohol throughout the province.
“The decline of the road carnage was a resounding success that attests to the effectiveness of our strategy to increase visibility of our traffic officers and the implementation of 24/7 shifts on priority roads,” said MEC Mohono.
The MEC expressed appreciation to all members of the North West Provincial Road Traffic Management Unit, South African Police Service, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Health personnel, Lonmin Platinum Mines and others who played a supporting function for their individual and collective sacrifices and contribution towards attainment of the objective to save lives.
She further commended five traffic officers who will be going into retirement, saying they have contributed a lot in saving lives on the roads throughout their careers. According to Mohono the closing of arrive alive does not mean that all services are suspended. She said that Provincial Road Traffic authorities will continue to intensify operations as part of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan (NREP) towards the Easter holidays.
As part of government’s programme of action, the department has in partnership with municipalities, South African Police Service, the Provincial Community Policing Board and Community Policing Forums arranged engagements and campaigns throughout the month to educate and inform the public about how it could contribute towards successful implementation of the National Crime Prevention Strategy.
