Mokonyane sends wishes to the “Class of 2011”

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane today wished all matriculants well, as they begin writing their final examinations.

The practical examinations in the province kicked off on Monday, 17 October with Computer Application Technology P1 (Practical). However, the final examinations officially begin on October 24 with candidates writing an English paper.

“We want to wish all our matriculants good luck during their final exams. We thank them for their hard work and dedication throughout their schooling years. This is the opening of a door to a new chapter in their lives as they close the chapter of their secondary education,” said Mokonyane.

Mokonyane cautioned parents, educators and society in general not to pressurise the learners but instead offer the right support and encouragement. “The pressure we put on the learners sometimes has catastrophic consequences,” she said.

She also urged learners to take advantage of the various post-Grade 12 learning opportunities that the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) has on offer.

This year, the GPG, through the Gauteng City Region Academy, awarded 1 050 bursaries to top learners from Quintiles 1, 2 and 3 schools (no fee paying schools) worth R58 million.

“We hope that this initiative will encourage the 'Class of 2011' to work even harder, so that they can also become beneficiaries of this scheme. These bursaries demonstrate our commitment to education, especially the education of a disadvantaged African Child. They remain a key priority as we continue to transform our society and demographic outlook of our economically active citizenry,” said Mokonyane.
