Mokonyane hands over clean audit award to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and staff

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane yesterday, Tuesday, handed over the award she received from Auditor-General (AG) Terence Nombembe to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and staff members in her office.

Nombembe awarded Mokonyane on Monday, 23 January 2012, for receiving a clean audit for the 2010/11 financial year. The office also received a clean audit in the 2009/10 financial year.

"This award is not mine. It belongs to all the good women and men in the office of the Premier who work hard and diligently to ensure that we account for every cent that we spend," said Mokonyane on Tuesday.

She applauded all senior managers and told them that they need to live up the standard that they have set for themselves.

"We are among the few departments in the country that received this award. It is something that you must live up to even after my term of office has ended," she said.

Mokonyane emphasised that the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) remains committed to spending money wisely.

She also commended the outgoing Director-General Nosizwe Nokwe-Macamo for the sterling leadership role she played in the past two years she has been with the office.

Mokonyane said that in keeping with the vision of making all departments in the province accountable and getting clean audits, a team of chief financial officers from all departments would put in place systems to track performance.

She said heads of department and financial officers must be accountable on a monthly and quarterly basis by presenting their reports to Treasury. “The AG has committed to give us all the necessary support in order to achieve clean audits by all our departments by 2014," said Mokonyane.

Accepting the award, CFO Sifiso Mkhize noted that the office would not have achieved the clean audit in two consecutive years if it was not for the support of all managers.

"From now on, we have a huge challenge to maintain this standard we have set. However, I am pleased that we all know what is expected of us in order to receive a clean audit," said Mkhize.
