Mohono declares war on fronting

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Desbo Mohono, has warned that her department would blacklist any company or individual found to have been part of any form of fronting. She was speaking during an Emerging Contractors' conference which was concluded over the weekend.

"We are particularly concerned that some of the benefits and opportunities brought by Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) have not gone to their intended beneficiaries as a result of the scourge of fronting."

She said that fronting "defeats and undermines all our efforts at breaking racial barriers, our economy and undoing the economic inequalities of our ugly past".

Mohono called on all people as well as players in the construction industry to "help exorcise the demon of fronting from whatever quarter it may rear its ugly head".

She said that her department would black list any company or individual found to have been part of fronting, which she likened to economic sabotage.

"No economy or society can develop and sustain itself on the basis of 'rent a black' or 'rent a woman'," she warned.
