Mohono’s Heritage Day message

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Desbo Mohono, has challenged RDP housing beneficiaries across the province to keep their houses clean and in a good state as part of commemorating Heritage Month.

“Living in a clean and habitable environment is part of our heritage and plays a role in restoring people’s dignity,” said Mohono. She said that her department had committed itself to increase the pace and quality of housing delivery as part of recognising Heritage Month. She said that a house helps to restore people’s dignity, and is therefore part of our heritage.

Mohono also said that the people of North West must do everything in their power to protect and preserve their own heritage. Delivering her message to staff and management of the Department of Human Settlements during the departmental Heritage Day celebrations on Tuesday, she said that the North West is one of the richest provinces especially in minerals, agriculture and heritage sites, most famously the Taung Skull. “Now, it is about time that we refocus our energies to ensure that we preserve all cultural resources in the entire province that have previously been neglected. This includes amongst others the heritage sites, game parks and museums,” said Mohono.

Mohono reminded staff that Africa is today recognised as the cradle of mankind. “In our part of the continent, we have a rich and varied past that is only now being appreciated for its richness and diversity. Indeed our heritage is the foundation from which we are working to rebuild our society.”
