Mogalakwena Local Municipality's current situation

The Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs [CoGHSTA] has always been following the situation in Mogalakwena Municipality with keen interest. As you know the Mogalakwena local Municipality‘s situation regarding the disputed contract of the Municipal Manager, Mr SW Kekana was taken to court by the Department of CoGHSTA. 

On 10 December 2013, the department has obtained a court order declaring the appointment of the Municipal Manager, Mr SW Kekana and alternatively the settlement agreement between him and the Municipality which purported to extend his contract to 2016, unlawful and accordingly set aside.

Mr Kekana has since filed a notice of intention for leave to appeal against the said court order.

While the situation is volatile the department is enjoined to act within the parameters of the law in an endeavour to intervene at Mogalakwena Municipality. 

The department is therefore currently engaging its legal team on how best to process this matter. The department is closely monitoring all the developments and the situation at Mogalakwena Municipality and in no time a determination will be made in respect of the further cause of action. This is done in the interest of Mogalakwena Municipality’s residents to continue to receive proper and better services.
