Today in the Modimolle Circuit High Court serial killer and rapist David Randitshene was sentenced to 16 life sentences plus 220 years imprisonment for a series of murders, rapes and kidnappings he committed between 2004 and 2008.
Randitshene was convicted on all charges and sentenced as follows:
* On 10 counts of murder to 10 life sentences
* On 16 counts of rape to 16 life sentences
* On 1 count of rape to 20 years imprisonment
* On 1 count of indecent assault to 20 years imprisonment
* On 18 counts of kidnapping to 180 years imprisonment (10 years for each count).
Randitshene was arrested on 16 May 2008 after an intensive police investigation during which over 550 DNA samples were tested before a police forensic expert identified the suspect. Local detectives and members of the investigative psychology unit from head office spearheaded the investigation which resulted in the accuser's conviction and sentencing.
Of all 19 of his victims, only one was an adult female, all the others being young girls. All victims were kidnapped and raped and 10 were murdered in a crime spree which devastated the community of Modimolle.
Judge Roger Claassen, in handing down the sentence, stipulated that Randitshene could not be considered for parole for the next 35 years, after which time the accused will be 80 years of age.
The South African Police Service congratulates the investigators, forensic expert and prosecutor on their sterling efforts. It was only necessary to call three state witnesses in order to present a solid case against the accused.
As preventing and detecting crimes against women and children remain a police priority, this heavy sentence should be seen as a warning to all offenders.
