A five year old Mmabatho learner, Oratile Mogomotsi died after he was knocked down by a taxi-minibus at a four-way intersection stop in Unit 8 whilst crossing the road on his way to school on Tuesday morning.
It is alleged that the taxi driver failed to stop at the stop sign and knocked down Oratilewho walking from Unit 12 to Modiredi Primary School in Unit 8 with his school mates. The accident occurred at around 7:30am at the intersection between Unit 8 and 12.
The driver who is in his 30’s was arrested at the scene of the accident after police who are investigating a case of culpable homicide and or reckless realised that he had several warrants of arrest issued to him due to failure to respond to pay road traffic fines.
In conveying condolences to the Mogomotsi family on the loss of their child who died in the tragic accident, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Desbo Mohonoappealed to motorists to drive with caution during rush hour periods to avoid unnecessary and preventable loss of lives.
The prevelance of accidents and road fatalities involving learners in the morning has been a concern to MEC Mohono who had engaged Mahikeng Local Municipality to intensify speed enforcement during rush hours and erect street humps.
Mohono has stressed that road safety is not just the responsibility of traffic law enforcement authorities but the responsibility of all road usersincluding pedestrians.
