The Minister for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Ms Lulu Xingwana expresses her condolences on the passing away of the struggle stalwart, Mama Bertha Gxowa. MaGxowa passed away at a Johannesburg hospital earlier today.
MaGxowa dedicated all her life to the struggle for a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic South Africa. MaGxowa is one of the leaders of the historic Women’s March to the Union Buildings on 9 August, 1956 which has since been declared a National Women’s Day. This day is used to reaffirm South Africa’s commitment to empowerment of women and gender equality - a goal that MaGxowa dedicated all her life to.
MaGxowa served in various capacities in the ANC Women’s League including being Treasurer General. From 1994, she was a Member of Parliament.
The ministry salutes MaGxowa for her selfless contribution the struggle for gender equality and national liberation in our country. The ministry conveys its sincere condolences to the family.
