The Ministry of Communications has noted the decision by Mr Solly Mokoetle to step down as Group CEO of the South African Broadcasting Corporation, SABC. Minister Radhakrishna “Roy” Padayachie commends both the SABC board and the outgoing GCEO for the mature manner in which they handled this protracted matter.
The minister believes that this paves way for the board to start focusing on stabilising the public broadcaster and to create an environment conducive for the implementation of a turn-around strategy.
“The importance of a stable public broadcaster that functions optimally to meet its mandate cannot be overemphasised. In the recent past the nation has been subjected to continuous reports about cracks within the leadership ranks of the SABC, tension between board members and senior management, a total breakdown of corporate governance and financial instability leading to cash flow challenges,” says Minister Padayachie.
The minister believes that it’s time to open a new page and start a new chapter and work towards ensuring that the SABC returns to normality. Minister Padayachie wishes to thank Mr Mokoetle for his contribution during his tenure as GCEO, and in particular his leadership of the public broadcaster during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The minister wishes Mr Mokoetle well in his future endeavours.
