Minister's 2010 comments carried worldwide

Recent comment by Minister of Sport and Recreation, Reverend Makhenkesi Stofile on the sharp price increases in air travel and accommodation during the 2010 FIFA World Cup has been reported on widely across the globe.

In his comment Minister Stofile urged particularly airlines and accommodation owners to avoid profiteering and unfair price increases, as this will have a detrimental effect on tourism in South Africa in general. It will also negatively affect the country as a tourist destination, he said, and added that it was immoral and wrong.

It was particularly media in football loving countries that picked up on the story. More than two dozen Spanish and Portuguese speaking publications in Europe and South America quoted the Minister. Major channels such as ESPN and Yahoo also carried the Minister's comments that were made after a Cabinet meeting on the World Cup.
