Minister Zweli Mkhize participates in the Good Green Deeds Campaign

COGTA principals respond to the president's call to clean SA

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr Zweli Mkhize led the CoGTa family to respond to the President's call to make South Africa clean.

Minister Mkhize, Deputy Minister andries Nel and Deputy Minister Obed Bapela joined the President, leaders from across the three spheres, stakeholders and communities in the Eastern Cape Province to launch and kick-start the Good Green Campaign.

This national call and initiative is meant to mobilise the country behind a clean South Africa. To this effect, the campaign that will speak to both visitors and locals changing behaviour and and attitude.

“This clarion call seeks to grow South Africa by  changing our environments. A cleaner environment is important as it will contribute to healthy communities. When properly managed and sorted correctly, waste can provide economic opportunities for poor communities,” said Minister Mkhize.

Ahead of the official launch by President Cyril Ramaphosa in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, CoGTA leadership went out to clean, showing their commitments:

  • Minister Mkhize joined MECs and local government leadership in the Central Business District (CBD) of East London,
  • Deputy Minister Obed Bapela went Kwa Dikela in Mdantsane to clean.
  • Deputy Minister Andries Nel went to King William's Town to lead the cleaning campaign.


This programmes builds into a nationwide initiatives that is currently unfolding and will continue throughout the year propelled by the communities and their need to build healthy environments.

Interacting with communities today (08 March 2019), Minister Mkhize called on all people in South Africa to join the Good Green Deeds movement nationwide and mobilise everyone to  friends, contribute in keeping South Africa clean.

"Let us ensure that this programme becomes part of our everyday life as this programme will contribute to growing the", said Minister Mkhize.

“Indeed today, South Africans are making a huge difference today and took a giant step towards  a clean South Africa,” said Minister Mkhize.
