Minister Kodwa rallies all South Africans to celebrate sporting and creative excellence on 15 December

Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister, Mr Zizi Kodwa has called on all South Africans and the public at large to celebrate the country’s sporting excellence and to showcase creative artistic brilliance on Friday, 15 December 2023, a National Sports Day Celebration in honour of the victorious Springboks, the South African national men’s rugby team.

Following the Springboks’ record-breaking fourth Rugby World Cup title victory, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared 15 December 2023 a public holiday. It is fitting that this celebratory holiday occurs during Reconciliation Month, which is dedicated to fostering reconciliation and unity in the country.

Minister Kodwa says, “The year 2023 will long live in the memory of South Africans, as an unprecedented year of breakthroughs and success for South African sport and on the creative and artistic front. The National Sport Day celebration is for all South Africans, from all walks of life, to celebrate the power of sport.”

Minister Kodwa adds, “I call on South Africans to wear our national team colours and jerseys on Friday. Let us gather in villages and towns to celebrate what has been a momentous year for South African sport and creative arts.”

Minister Kodwa further states, “Let us relive the moments that followed the final whistle of the 2023 Rugby World Cup final, where South Africans united in celebration and pride following the Springboks’ record-breaking Rugby World Cup win. Let us use the National Sport Day celebration to showcase the power of sport and the arts to forge social cohesion and nation building and inspiring a winning nation.”
