Special Investigating Unit (SIU) Proclamation - South African Post Office (SAPO)
Ministry of Communications welcomes the Proclamation issued by President Jacob Zuma directing the Special Investigating Unit to investigate allegations of maladministration at the South African Post Office.
Minister of Communications Yunus Carrim welcomed the Proclamation issued by President Jacob Zuma directing the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of serious maladministration in the affairs of the South African Post Office (SAPO).
“The investigation will help the SAPO to deal with mismanagement, account more accurately for public funds, and plan properly for a sustainable post office in a rapidly digitizing era,” said Carrim.
The outcome of the SIU investigation would empower the SAPO to ensure that action is taken against those found guilty of misconduct, and assist the Department to stabilise the SAPO and bolster its efforts to exercise more effective oversight over the post office.
“We call on everyone to cooperate fully with the SIU so that the investigations can be concluded speedily,” said Carrim.
Acting chairperson of the SAPO, Ms Nelly Manzini, also welcomed the proclamation. “The outcomes of this intervention will provide input to the SAPO to strengthen governance and allow the company to play its rightful and undisputed role of enabling economic opportunity and promoting the social inclusion of all South Africans. Above all, it will do this being a good corporate citizen,” she said.
Manzini added that the timing of the intervention proves a good opportunity for the SAPO as the company is currently in the process of implementing a business overhaul strategy, backed by a detailed corporate plan, which is aimed at improving its overall performance and market position.
“Consequently, the SAPO will provide full cooperation to the investigation,” she said.
