The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mr. Velenkosini Hlabisa, has expressed deep sadness over the tragic loss of three firefighters who succumbed to injuries sustained during a devastating fire incident in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands today.

The brave firefighters lost their lives due to their injuries, while others are currently receiving treatment in hospital for severe burn wounds.

“Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen firefighters during this incredibly difficult time. Their dedication and selflessness in the face of danger shows the true spirit of service and sacrifice that defines our firefighting community,” Minister Hlabisa said.

The Minister further extends his condolences to all those affected by this heartbreaking loss and the earlier veld fires that ravaged parts of the King Cetshwayo, Ilembe, uThukela, and Zululand Districts, which claimed seven lives.

The National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), as a key player in the administration and implementation of fire services legislation and related duties, stands ready to support the Midlands EMS and KZN local authorities during this period of mourning and recovery.
