Minister Thulas Nxesi meets with National Road Freight Bargaining Council

Employment and Labour Minister, Nxesi meeting with freight industry to resolve conflict

As a follow-up to the inter-ministerial Committee that has been appointed by the President to deal with the spate of violence in the road freight (trucking) industry, the Minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi this week met with the employers and labour parties to the National Road Freight Bargaining Council in seeking ways to address issues that are plaguing the road freight industry.

In this meeting the Minister of Employment and Labour was adamant that this matter be addressed as a matter of urgency because of its negative impact on the economy and the lives and livelihoods of people.

In acknowledgement of the urgency of the need for high level intervention, the parties have agreed to engage on a regular basis in order to address this matter.

The engagement would also include the affected workers and employers as well as all parties that are linked to these developments. This engagement sought to strengthen the existing bargaining arrangements and institutions in the sector and will attempt to bring those outside of its fold into a formal process of engagement

A number of initiatives and a broad range of proposed interventions were discussed in order to address this phenomenon in a holistic and comprehensive manner. The meeting felt strongly that it is important for government to include all the relevant departments and agencies to address the broad nature of this tension in the industry.
