Minister Thembi Nkadimeng dismisses misleading media article that six municipalities are unable to pay salaries

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA, Thembi Nkadimeng has noted with concern themedia article purporting that six municipalities are unable to pay salaries.

Minister Nkadimeng wishes to clarify that, contrary to reports, only Mafube Local Municipality is currently grappling with financial difficulties, leading to temporary constraints in paying employee salaries.

The Department of Cooperative Governance is working around the clock with all relevant stakeholders to expedite the resolution of this matter and ensure that the affected workers receive their salaries before the end of this month.

Minister Nkadimeng confirms the commitment of the Department to collaborate closely with Mafube Local Municipality and other municipalities experiencing challenges. The objective is to provide ongoing support and to work collectively with relevant stakeholders in identifying sustainable and effective solutions to address these challenges.  

The Minister further assures the public that the Department remains dedicated to the well-being of all municipal employees and the smooth functioning of municipalities. To this effect, Minister Nkadimeng and Deputy Minister Tau have led multiple Ministerial support and interventions outreaches to provinces and municipalities to give impetus to the injunctions of s154 of the Constitution and the Departmental led municipal support and interventions package.
