Minister Siyabonga Cwele thanks citizens for collecting identity documents

Home Affairs Minister Dr Siyabonga Cwele thanks citizens and all stakeholders for heeding the call to collect identity documents

The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Siyabonga Cwele, welcomes the progress that is being made in reducing the number of uncollected IDs across the country, particularly in Gauteng. In the first four days of this week, the number of uncollected IDs in Gauteng was reduced to 55 000, from 90 000 of last week.

Minister Cwele received the latest briefing when he was visiting the Ga-Rankuwa Home Affairs office to monitor service delivery and to assess the office’s readiness to assist citizens who may want to visit home affairs over the Voter Registration Weekend.

Minister Cwele was supported by Member of Parliament, Hon Ms Angie Molebatsi, representatives from local government, the Tshwane Speaker’s Office, councillors, church leaders and community development workers.

Home Affairs offices will be opened from 08:00 in the morning until 17:00 in the afternoon on Saturday and Sunday. This would be to assist, mostly, citizens who may want to come and collect their IDs, apply for temporary identification certificates or reapply for IDs.

Minister Cwele has been meeting stakeholders and visiting offices in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape to strengthen the partnership with provincial and local governments.

“It is clear that we can indeed grow South Africa when we work together. The response from citizens and all stakeholders has been tremendous. I am happy that so many people came to our offices to collect their IDs,” said Minister Cwele.

He further called on all those citizens who had applied for IDs to come and collect their IDs.

“I am satisfied that our offices will be ready to assist our citizens over this coming weekend,” he said.

Minister Cwele also handed over two smart ID cards to senior citizens, Mr Matsebe Johannes Masemola and Mapula Christina Malongoane, who came to collect their IDs at the Ga-Rankuwa office. He called on all senior citizens who have applied for IDs to come and collect their documents.
