The Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Hon.Sindisiwe Chikunga sends her message of condolences to the families of the 12 Victims of Road Traffic Incidents (RTI) who lost their life in a sideswipe crash involving a truck and a bus transporting political party supporters on the R34 near Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday night.
“Vehicle accidents lead to a range of disabilities, from physical impairments such as paralysis or limb loss, to sensory disabilities like vision or hearing loss, and psychological disabilities like PTSD. These disabilities can significantly impact a person's ability to perform daily tasks, work, and participate in social activities”. Said Minister Chikunga.
Vehicle accidents can significantly impact individuals and families, particularly those with low incomes, pushing them further into poverty or hindering their economic potential. The impact of road crashes on household income, leads to Unemployment, Divorce Rate and Income Gaps for Surviving Victims of Road-Crashes.
Road crashes are becoming a global health crisis and, as such, require comprehensive measures to prevent them, including a better understanding of the social impacts of road- related deaths and injuries.
A significant number of people experience disability because of vehicle accidents and Road traffic injuries which are the major cause of disability and death. “Our government has created a robust framework of legislative and policy tools designed to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities, such as the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act (PEPUDA), which seeks to prevent discrimination and promote equality by explicitly addressing the needs of people with disabilities” Conclude Minister Chikunga.
