‘We are hoping to complete repair work in next 3 hours,’ says Minister.'
Robin Carlisle, the Minister for Transport and Public Works in the Western Cape has provided an update on the latest developments on Chapman’s Peak Drive, which was closed yesterday after a Level 4 rock fall.
A rock fell onto the centre line of the road at around 4pm yesterday, leaving a large impact crater just past the half tunnel, on the Noordhoek side of the Drive. The rock fall was almost certainly the result of the heavy rains on the slopes of Chapman’s Peak.
‘A 3-man team is currently securing and reinstating the 50-metre long Low Energy Barrier that was damaged by the rock, which also left a crater in the road that measures about 30cm wide and about 20cm deep.
‘This crater has already been repaired.
‘Due to heavy rain earlier this afternoon some repair time was lost, but Drive operator Entilini is hoping to complete the repair work in the next 3 hours.’
Level 4 rock falls are the most severe and as per the standard operating procedure agreed with Entilini, the road was closed immediately.
