Minister Rob Davies on Mandela day

Make every day a Mandela Day – Minister Davies urges Hopetown residents

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies has urged residents of Hopetown in the Northern Cape to make every day a Mandela Day by selflessly and continuously extending a helping hand to the needy members of the community. Minister Davies was speaking at a function hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) today where he handed over blankets and food parcels to 40 elderly residents.

The event, which was held under the theme of this year’s Mandela Month, Make every day a Mandela Day: Contributing 67 minutes of our time to help those in need, was part of the annual celebration of the Nelson Mandela International Day.

“Every year since 2010 the world recognises and celebrates July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day in honour of the former President Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of the selfless life that he dedicated to making our country and the whole world a better place for all people to live in. You can also make a contribution and change someone’s life for the better. Reach out to those who seek aid and provide the little that you can to people that are less fortunate. Make every day a Mandela Day by assisting the needy in your community and changing their lives for the better,” said Minister Davies.

He added that the Mandela Day provided citizens all over the world with an opportunity to infuse the spirit of Tata Mandela on caring for people that are less fortunate and encouraging everyone to do everything that they can to improve the lives of other people.

Talking to journalists after his speech, Minister Davies said that the dti was committed to improving the lives of the people in the Northern Cape in general through supporting the agro-processing industry. He added that the Special Economic Zone that the department planned to establish in Upington would also go a long way in boosting the economy of the province and creating job opportunities.
