A seriously fatal crash involving an articulated truck, a bus and a RAV 4 SUV on the R40, just outside White River on the Hazyview road, Mpumalanga, has left ten people dead, six seriously injured and 34 more slightly injured – according to preliminary reports.
It is reported that the truck driver lost control of the truck and collided partially head on with the bus and the RAV 4 collided into the wreckage. All vehicles have burnt almost beyond recognition. Further investigation is underway, and the Road Traffic Management Corporation has dispatched a national team of investigators to join the investigation by the South African Police Services.
Minister Dipuo Peters and Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) CEO Advocate Makhosini have both expressed utter shock and deep sadness at the tragic incident.
The Minister takes this moment also to express hers and the government’s condolences to bereaved families.
“This is deeply shocking and saddening and our condolences go to the families bereaved. My fervent wish is for those injured to recover speedily.
I call on all South Africans to spare a thought for all affected, the law enforcement officers and emergency rescue services who are all out to do their best under the circumstances.
The National Department of Transport will work closely with the provincial department and make sure that the provincial capacity is not found wanting in this situation.”
The Minister has also given the assurance that the Road Accident Fund, an entity of the department, will also be on the ground to give support and assistance to families of both the deceased and the injured.
