Minister Peters calls for energy sector to assist floods victims

The Minister of Energy Ms Dipuo Peters is humbly appealing to all entities and the business community in the energy sector to make a much needed contribution towards assisting the government in its attempt to restore the lives of those who have been affected by the devastating floods countrywide.

Many of those affected are the poor and vulnerable members of our society who are not only destitute but also desperate for shelter and food. Government’s attempt to assist those affected cannot reach everyone, however if we come together as a collective, we will be able to make a speedy and meaningful contribution to the displaced communities.

Destructive incidence of families losing their loved ones through floods, lightning, storms and tornadoes have been reported countrywide. Some people have sustained injuries, lost houses, business places and other infrastructures.

Following this disaster, a national state of disaster has been declared which covers seven provinces and 28 municipalities these include Gauteng, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape and Limpopo.

The Department of Energy has opened a Trust Account for those who want to heed the call and contribute towards rebuilding the lives of those affected. The Department will ensure that all donations reach those in need in a well co-ordinated and coherent manner. The Minister will also publicly announce the amount made and how the proceeds will be distributed to those affected.
