Mashatile congratulates Ladysmith Black Mambazo on winning the Grammys
Arts and Culture Minister, Paul Mashatile, congratulates our home-grown music group, the Ladysmith Black Mambazo, on winning the best world music album at this year’s Grammy Awards.
"I am delighted and happy for the Ladysmith Black Mambazo for their great feat on the world stage", Mashatile proclaimed.
“The achievement of the Ladysmith Black Mambazo goes to demonstrate the high quality of our music and proves that our artists and their products compete on an equal if not better footing with their peers worldwide", Mashatile said.
“I am proud of the Ladysmith Black Mambazo as their unprecedented achievement - their fourth Grammy Awards - goes a long way in placing our creative and cultural industries on the world artistic pedestal that can only open excellent opportunities for our artists", Mashatile added.
The Ladysmith Black Mambazo shared this award, best world music album, with flamenco fusionists the Gipsy Kings for their live album ‘Singing for Peace Around the World’.
The music of the Ladysmith Black Mambazo contributes to the preservation and promotion of our rich culture and heritage whilst assisting in building social cohesion and nation building.
“How appropriate that Black Mambazo dedicated the award to our late world icon, Tata Nelson Mandela and promised to donate proceeds of the album to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. The South African people are proud of you, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. May your work and achievements continue to inspire established and up and coming artists to aim for the stars”, Mashatile concluded.
