Minister Nzimande mourns the passing on of Anene Booysen's mother

The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr. Blade Nzimande, conveys his heartfelt condolences to the family and relatives of Ms. Corlia Olivier on her passing on. Ms Olivier surrendered to a battle with cervical cancer, having been diagnosed with the disease last year.

She was the mother to the late Anene Booysen, who came under national and international spotlight following her brutal rape, mutilation and murder on the fateful morning of 2 February 2013 in Bredasdorp.

The Department of Higher Education and Training, through the Construction Sector Education and Training Authority (CETA) has established a Skills Development Centre in honour of Anene.

Earlier this year, at a sod-turning ceremony marking the commencement of the construction of the Skills Centre, Minister Nzimane announced the employment of Anene’s mother as the housekeeper of the Centre. She could not even attend the momentous ceremony due to ill health.

It is unfortunate that Ms Olivier passed away when the Bredasdorp community is still upbeat about the Anene Booysen Development Centre. Her passing on happens when Anene’s tragedy is being changed from a permanent source of pain into hope.

May the Olivier and Booysen families be comforted during these trying times. May Corlia Olivier’s soul rest in peace.
