“We are not here to only learn, but to also share”, Mokonyane.
The Department of Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane arrived in Stockholm, Sweden yesterday, 23 August 2015 to attend the 2015 World Water Week.
During the South African Water Sector briefing session which preceded the main conference, Minister Mokonyane said that although she understands that the main purpose of attending this momentous event is to learn how other countries deal with their water related issues, it is very important to note that the South African Water Sector also has ample experiences to share and they should utilise the platform to do that.
“We are not here to only learn, but to also share with people from different parts of the world the great milestones that South Africa has achieved in relation to water and sanitation provision without short-changing our abilities and potentials.”
She added that all South Africans present should leave this place with much more determination and much more knowledge and appreciation of their roles in the sector.
Being a true believer of women empowerment, Minister Mokonyane is also utilising the World Water Conference to bring to light issues of how water and sanitation supply affects South African women and girl children by elaborating on specific challenges and successful examples of women focused water, sanitation and hygiene programmes. She did this as she took part in the session titled Women for water, every woman counts, every second counts where she served as a panellist.
This happens during the time when South Africa is celebrating women’s month.
The week-long water conference Minister Mokonyane is currently attending in Sweden is being held under the theme ‘Water for development’. The main purpose of the conference is to bring together governments, academics and organisations to find solutions for water related challenges faced by the global community.
Meanwhile, three learners from Mathlari High School in Limpopo will represent South Africa in the Junior World Water Prize Competition by going against world technological heavyweights like China and Germany as they present their scientific water conservation and water demand management project.
