Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi commends successful mine rescue operation

Mineral Resources Minister Advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi has commended the work done in ensuring that miners trapped underground yesterday at Harmony’s Kusasalethu mine were all successfully brought to surface.

The incident occurred yesterday morning, 22 February 2015 at 75 level, approximately 2300 meters below surface. All 486 employees will undergo medical observation.

“The Mine Rescue Services, labour unions and mine management did a sterling job, and we are grateful that all the miners are safe,” Minister Ramatlhodi said.

“The health and safety of mineworkers remains a top priority, and we urge employers to remain vigilant in this regard and continue to comply with provisions in the Mine Health and Safety Act, as well as the declaration signed by all stakeholders at last year’s Health and Safety Summit”.

The Chief Inspectorate of Mines will undertake an investigation and inquiry into the incident, in line with the Act, and the mine will be expected to implement remedial measures.
