Minister Ndebele on twelve killed in Limpopo bus crash

An independent team of accident investigation and reconstruction specialists are assisting in the culpable homicide investigation, following the deaths of twelve Malawian nationals in a road crash involving a bus on the N1 near Louis Trichardt in Limpopo this morning (17 July 2011).

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has conveyed condolences to the families of those killed. “We want to convey condolences to the families of those killed in this tragic road crash, and wish those injured a speedy recovery,” the Minister said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them all during these difficult moments. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has dispatched an independent team of accident investigation and reconstruction specialists to assist in the investigation of this crash.

“We are pleading with everyone to take personally the fight against deaths on our roads and to work together to bring down road deaths during this global Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 - 2020.

Alone we might not be strong enough, but we now stand together with the world to declare that road deaths can be stopped. It is all in our hands,” said Minister Ndebele.

As part of South Africa’s new National Rolling Enforcement Plan (NREP) announced by Minister Ndebele on 10 September 2010, from 1 October 2010 to 30 June 2011, 10,877,203 vehicles and drivers have been checked, 4,537,272 fines issued for various traffic offences, 16,828 drunk drivers arrested and 42,960 un-roadworthy vehicles discontinued from use.
