Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has reiterated that the rights of commuters are of fundamental importance. The minister’s comments come in the light of a strike by certain taxi operators in Johannesburg. “The right to movement is a fundamental right. The choice of movement is also a fundamental right. The commuter is the most important person and mutual respect is of paramount importance.
As government, we will not compromise the rights of commuters. In conjunction with provinces and municipalities, we have long been engaging and will continue to engage with taxi industry. However, the mandate of the Department of Transport is to provide safe, efficient and reliable public transport,” said Minister Ndebele.
