Minister Ndebele on South African Airways (SAA) plane crash in Durban

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has wished those injured in a South African Airways (SAA) Airlink plane crash, in Merebank near Durban International Airport earlier today, Thursday, 24 September 2009, a speedy recovery.

"We want to wish those injured in the plane crash in Merebank this morning a speedy recovery. We acknowledge that this is a difficult time for those injured and their families and our thoughts and prayers are with them. Accident investigators from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have been dispatched to the scene and an on-site investigation will be carried out from which a report will be prepared to determine the probable cause of the crash," said the Minister.

According to initial reports, the plane broke in two after crashing into a school ground in Merebank shortly after take-off from Durban International Airport around 08h00 this morning. Senior officials from the Department of Transport, CAA, Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA), SAA and emergency service personnel are all on scene.
