Minister Ndebele says Rovos Rail accident will not impact on 2010 transport preparations

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has noted with concern reports of the derailment of a Rovos Rail train (private train operator) near Pretoria earlier today (Wednesday, 21 April 2010), and expeditiously dispatched a team of investigators to the scene to determine the cause of the accident.

“We wish to convey our condolences to the families and relatives of those killed in the Rovos Rail train accident near Pretoria earlier today (Wednesday, 21 April 2010). We wish those injured a speedy recovery. I have spoken with both the Managing Director of Rovos Rail and the CEO of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) to provide the necessary collective support as the Rail Family. We have called upon the Rail Safety Regulator to speed up their investigation into the circumstances which led to this tragic accident.

“We want to assure South Africans, as well as our international visitors, that this accident is an isolated incident that does not have any impact on the integrated transport plan that the Department of Transport is in the process of operationalising ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, or the country’s ability and readiness to host the tournament.

“As a result of this accident, there will be disruptions to train services between Johannesburg and Pretoria, and we appeal for understanding and patience from commuters. We have made alternative arrangements to ensure that passengers reach their destinations, and we are doing everything possible to ensure that services return to
normal.

“We have been constantly championing safety in all modes of transport, and we want to assure passengers, both local and international, that our rail operations are indeed safe. As government, we remain committed to providing safe, efficient and affordable public transport for South Africans and visitors alike,” said Minister Ndebele.
