Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has expressed delight that South Africa has been elected vice-chair of the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
At the 103rd session of the IMO Council held in London earlier today Thursday, 3 December 2009, Mr Dumisani Ntuli of South Africa was elected to the position of vice-chairman of the IMO Council. This followed the election earlier of Mr Jeffrey Lantz of the United States of America as chairman of Council.
“We are extremely delighted that South Africa has been elected to the position of vice-chairman of the IMO Council, with the United States of America being elected as chairman. By electing South Africa as vice chairman, the IMO Council recognises the significant role played by South Africa in this important United Nations body.
“We now take our place proudly among the leading maritime nations of the world. We will use our place in the IMO Council to develop our maritime sector, create jobs and grow our economy. Approximately 98 percent of our goods are transported through the sea and therefore we must play a key role as a port country, coastal country and flag country.
“Next year 2010, we will launch the Year of the Seafarer. We must grab this opportunity to attract all our people into this international industry which offers opportunities for travel, training and work in any part of the world,” said the Minister.
South Africa was elected onto the IMO Council in London last Friday, 27 November 2009. Minister Ndebele led the bid for the IMO Council.
