Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has conveyed condolences to the family of respected South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) senior journalist Kgomotso Sebetso who was killed in a car crash.

“We want to convey condolences to the family, relatives and colleagues of Mr Kgomotso Sebetso who was killed in a car crash. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all during these difficult moments.

“On Wednesday, 11 May 2011, South Africa will join the rest of the world to officially launch the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. It is the living who close the eyes of the dead, but it is the dead who must open the eyes of the living. South Africa fully supports the Make Roads Safe Campaign as well as the Decade of Action for Road Safety, to reduce the appalling projected increase in road deaths. We call upon all citizens to strengthen this global movement that is demanding real action against road deaths, and save thousands of lives and billions of rands. But, we must act now,” said Minister Ndebele.

Decade of Action launch events will take place in major cities throughout 11 May 2011. East to west, starting in New Zealand at the beginning of the day, and ending in Mexico high profile public events will take place. Media are invited to join Minister Ndebele, and various representatives from government, the private sector and civil society, at South Africa’s launch of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety on Wednesday, 11 May 2011.
