Minister Ndebele on death of former Msunduzi Mayor Siphiwe Gwala

Correctional Services Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has conveyed condolences to the family and colleagues of former Msunduzi Mayor and Popcru co-founder, Siphiwe Gwala, who passed away yesterday (11 September 2012).

Gwala joined the Department of Correctional Services in 1985 as a Male Nurse, and worked at the hospital at the old Pietermaritzburg prison. He was one of the first people elected as a municipal councillor in 1995, and served as Mayor of the Pietermaritzburg.

Msunduzi Transitional Local Council from 1997 to 2000. From 2000 to 2003, he served as Speaker of the uMgungundlovu District Municipality. He was also employed as Strategic Executive Manager: Community
Services at the uMgungundlovu District Municipality.

"On behalf of the correctional services family, we want to convey our sincere condolences to the family, and colleagues, of Siphiwe Gwala. Siphiwe is not only a former Correctional Official. He also served as Councillor, Mayor and Speaker during a critical period in KwaZulu-Natal, and we worked closely with him.

He came from a humble background, and was a devoted activist in social and political life. Siphiwe will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during these difficult moments," Minister Ndebele said.
