Minister Ndebele on Correctional Services financial management turnaround

Correctional Services Minister Sibusiso Ndebele, who is currently on a study tour to Brazil, Cuba and New York, says that the Department of Correctional Services will ensure improved financial management.

This follows the Department’s latest (2011/12) annual report, in which the Auditor-General gives it a qualified audit.

“The Ministry of Correctional Services has noted issues raised by the Auditor-General regarding the Department of Correctional Services 2011/12 annual report. The Department is currently implementing a turnaround strategy and plan to ensure improved financial management with respect to the identified weaknesses.

“Following my appointment as Minister of Correctional Services on 12 June 2012, I have had several engagements with the National Commissioner Mr. Tom Moyane, senior managers and other officials and made it abundantly clear that it is critical that we take our positions as public servants very seriously and take the corrections challenges to a higher level of decision-making, which is solution orientated. If the department is going to improve on its way of doing things, it is only through the dynamic contribution of all officials. It is very important that we work together as a team and yield sound and objective results that do not only glorify our image as the Department of Correctional Services, but have a meaningful impact on the lives of our citizens. We are working hard, and we are confident that our collective effort as a Department will result in better financial management,” said the Minister.
