Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has called on provinces and municipalities to “energise” road safety in line with the United Nations (UN) Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 to 2020.
Addressing Transport MECs and Senior Officials at a Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) Shareholders’ Committee meeting in Pretoria earlier today, 5 March Minister Ndebele said: “Provinces and municipalities must energise road safety in line with the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 to 2020.
We cannot have democratic citizens who do not practise democracy on the roads. It is therefore, imperative that the decisions we make assist our entire country to implement cutting-edge programmes to ensure safer roads in South Africa.”
Other issues discussed at the meeting included:
- Appointment of a panel for selection and interviews for RTMC CEO;
- Approval of the RTMC Strategic Plan 2011 to 2015; and
- No official date for the national roll-out of the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) has been announced as yet. In due course, the RTMC Shareholders’ Committee will pronounce on this matter.
