Minister Nathi Mthethwa is saddened by the passing of South Africa's legendary soul and mbaqanga artist, Pat Shange. The legendary singer who was also a fashionista of note rose to prominence in the 70’s and 80’s. He gained popularity in most townships after the release of hits like Sweet Mama, Casanova and Shayile Time.
“The emotional strain that goes with this rampage facing us as a society, and by extension the creative and cultural industry is just immense. Just this week we also learned about the passing of one of our icons, Tsepo Tshola” sadly commented Minister Mthethwa.
“We all recall Pat Shange’s popularity back in the 80’s as his music was the soul of many household gatherings and remained a part of most people’s childhood. He equally contributed immensely to the genre of what was then called bubble-gum music” further said Minister Mthethwa as he extended condolences to the family, friends, loved ones and fans.
Pat Shange reportedly passed on from acute Covid-19 related complications on Tuesday, 13 July 2021. The 65-year old will be remembered amongst original artist of the music genre popularly referred to as bubblegum. This form of pop music was popular in the late 80s. Its sound was a distinctive mix of vocals, electronic keyboards with a blend of energetic beats that were easy to dance to.
