South African sporting icon and legendary boxing trainer Mzimasi Mnguni has passed away. In his lifetime, Mnguni produced many National and World Boxing Champions. He put South Africa on the global boxing map through his famed Eyethu Boxing Gym in Mdantsane, East London.
His most famous prodigies were the likes of Welcome Ncita, Masibulele” Hawk” Makepula and Vuyani “The Beast” Bungu, just to mention a few.
Upon receiving the news, the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa said, ”I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our icon and legend in the sport of boxing. Mnguni leaves an indelible mark on South African sport. His contribution towards shaping the lives of young aspiring boxers during the dark days of apartheid, guarantees his place in history as one of the pantheons of sport in our country. To the Mnguni family, friends and boxing fraternity at large, please accept my deepest sympathy for this loss, as it is also felt by the entire world, owing to the global stature of Mnguni. His passing truly signifies the end of an era.”
Bra Mzi, as he was a affectionately known, was also a community leader and an entrepreneur who was always at the service of his community, selflessly giving his time and resources. The Department honoured him for his outstanding service to the sport of boxing with a Steve Tshwete Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 South African Sport Awards.
