Minister Naledi Pandor appoints new Council for Natural Scientific Professions

South Africa's new Council for Natural Scientific Professions unveiled

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, inaugurated  the new 22-member South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) in Pretoria today, 25 June.

Senior Environmental Assessment Practitioner at Naledzi Environmental Consultants and Senior Manager for Industrial Statistics at Sasol Group Technology, Dr Roelof Coetzer, are among the experts who make up the new council.

SACNASP is the legislated regulatory body for Natural Science Professionals in South Africa. Its primary function is to register natural scientists, and foster the ethical practise and training of the natural scientific professions.

The Minister recently appointed the council as required by the Natural Scientific Professions Act Act, 2003, as amended by the Science and Technology Laws Amendment Act, 2014.

Speaking at the inauguration event, Minister Pandor told the new council that the work of the Department of Science and Technology was expanding because there is acknowledgement that science, technology and innovation were huge drivers for growth in the future. The Minister added that the Department was investing heavily in research and innovation to modernise the country's industry. The Minister urged the new council to assist in enhancing South Africa's standing in the natural scientific environment.

The new council has been appointed for four years, from 1 May 2015 to 30 April 2019. The chairperson of the council will be elected at the first council meeting.
