Minister Motshekga welcomes Congress of South African Students' (COSAS) decision

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, has welcomed today's move by the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) to withdraw demonstrations at the ongoing court appearances of Molemo ‘Jub Jub’ Maarohanye and Themba Tshabalala.

While we understand the emotional nature of the case as it affects learners and their deceased or injured counterparts, the minister believes the decision to go back to class will go a long way towards maintaining maximum hours of learning.

‘The department has been concerned that continuously attending the case by learners was at the expense of teaching and learning. We want our learners in class during all school hours. This matter is better left to the courts’, said Minister Motshekga.

The national Department of Basic Education, along with the Gauteng provincial Education department will continue engaging with COSAS to ensure that hours of learning are not interrupted.
