Minister Motshekga clears the Eastern Cape confusion

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has re-iterated her department's commitment to implementing Section 100 (1) (b) of the Constitution in the Eastern Cape Department of Education.

The Minister would like to re-affirm the following:

  • That intervention in the Eastern Cape Education Department is still continuing.
  • That the Department of Basic Education is jointly implementing the intervention with the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, through a team of five Cabinet Ministers and five MECs from the Eastern Cape Provincial Government.
  • The report specified that urgent steps needed to be taken to ensure that our mission of providing quality education in the Eastern Cape is not compromised.
  • Three weeks ago Cabinet received a report from the team, led by Deputy Minister of Basic Education Mr Enver Surty, outlining the deep challenges facing the Eastern Cape Department of Education.
  • Part of the report was subsequently presented to the Select Committee on Education and Recreation in Parliament on Wednesday, 15 February 2012.

"I commit my team to continue to play an oversight role and to support the province to ensure that the interest of learners take priority", says Minister Motshekga.

The Department of Basic Education will continue to intervene in curriculum support, infrastructure, human resources, budget and planning. In the following weeks, the Minister through the five-a-team will update Cabinet and further request Cabinet to pronounce on some of the challenges that continue to plague the Eastern Cape Education Department.

The last meeting of the five-a-side team reiterated government's commitment to continue with the intervention in full. There are already clear work streams established through our intervention to monitor and evaluate progress. Enquiries regarding the Superintendant-General of the Department of Education in the Eastern Cape, Advocate  Modidima Mannya, can be referred to the Eastern Cape Provincial Government.
