Minister Molewa warns on floods

Water and Environmental Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa, has advised all people, especially those living near dams and rivers to remain alert as above average rains continue to fall in various parts of the country and water levels continue to increase in the country’s major dams and rivers.

“As much as we all want rain to boost our water supply, we must all be aware that heavy rains are also likely to cause damage to property and people’s lives,” said Molewa, adding that there were likely to be more threats of flooding in many parts of the country for the remainder of the rain season, but warned people not to panic as the department was monitoring the situation and would issue warnings on regular basis.

Last week, Molewa visited the flood management office in the Department of Water Affairs’ national office to be appraised of the developing situation and plans for the flood routing management system. The minister also undertook inspection visits to the Vaal Dam/Orange River System and Ladysmith and Berville areas in KwaZulu-Natal. This week, she visited the Bloemhof Dam in the North West and Douglas in the Northern Cape.
