Title deeds handover and COVID-19 vaccination drive to unlock socio-economic activities
Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has today handed over title deeds to senior citizens in Hanover Community, Emthanjeni Local Municipality in the Northern Cape Province, as part of government's efforts to deliver services. “It is encouraging that most people who are receiving their title deeds today are the elderly and this resonates well with our mandate to restore the dignity of our people, through the implementation of the various programmes in the department,” said Minister Kubayi.
The Minister added that this programme was one of the key priorities in the current administration to restore the dignity and sense of ownership for South Africans who have benefitted from the government free housing subsidy programme. Minister Kubayi, who is also a Champion of the implementation of the District Development Model (DDM) in the Pixley Ka Seme District Municipality, also encouraged members of the community to get vaccinated and ensure the country reaches population immunity. Dr Zamani Saul, Premier of the Northern Cape, said that a title deed guarantees a person to take ownership of their property. “A title deed ensures that you take ownership of your property, the house, the land and everything on it, no one can come and claim it’s theirs”.
He added that title deeds secures the future of the children in cases where the parents are deceased. The MEC of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs, Mr Bentley Vass, MEC of Finance, MEC of Social Development, Ms Nontobeko Vilakazi formed part of the delegation. The engagement followed a site inspection at the De Aar Project which is set to deliver 2386 housing units. The Minister together with the Premier, MEC and the District Mayor were satisfied with the workmanship of the contractors.
The completed units, fitted with solar water geysers and bulk services, will be handed over to beneficiaries in the coming weeks. Minister Kubayi, who is on a two-day visit to the Northern Cape to conduct oversight on human settlements projects, will on Friday 01 October 2021 visit Lerato Park Community Residential Units (CRU) - part of the Department’s programme focused on upgrading of government owned communal rental accommodation also known as hostels.
The CRU programme aims to facilitate the provision of secure, and stable rental tenure for lower income persons/households. The Minister and the Premier will also participate in sod turning for the first phase of the Hull Street Social Housing Project and hand over a house to a military veteran at Sol Plaatje Municipality. The Northern Cape is the forth-leg of the Ministerial visit after KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape in the past few weeks.
